China Conducts PLA Drills and Missile Tests as It Warns U.S. Over Venezuela President’s Detention

China has carried out standard troop deployments, scheduled People’s Liberation Army (PLA) drills, and missile tests as it continues to issue stern warnings to the United States following Washington’s military action in Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolás Maduro.

Chinese defense officials described the military activities as routine and planned in advance, emphasizing that the exercises fall within China’s normal defense posture. However, the timing of the drills has drawn international attention as Beijing sharply criticizes the United States for what it calls a violation of international law and national sovereignty.

In recent statements, China’s Foreign Ministry condemned the U.S. attack on Venezuela and the capture of its president, warning that continued detention of Maduro could lead to “serious consequences” for regional and global stability. Beijing has demanded his immediate and unconditional release, aligning its position with several countries that have denounced the U.S. action.

Military analysts note that while the PLA drills and missile tests do not indicate imminent conflict, they serve as a strategic signal of readiness and deterrence. China has frequently used large-scale exercises and weapons testing during periods of heightened diplomatic tension to underscore its ability to defend its interests and allies without formally escalating toward war.

The drills reportedly involved ground forces, naval units, and rocket forces, reinforcing China’s message that it possesses both conventional and strategic capabilities. Officials stressed that China is not seeking confrontation but will not remain silent in the face of what it views as unilateral military actions by Washington.

The United States has defended its actions in Venezuela, arguing they were necessary for security and regional stability, though the move has sparked widespread backlash from governments, international organizations, and critics at home and abroad. Calls for investigations and accountability have continued to mount as diplomatic pressure increases.

As tensions rise, global powers are urging restraint, warning that further escalation between major nations could deepen instability in an already volatile international environment. For now, China appears to be walking a careful line—demonstrating military strength while stopping short of direct confrontation, even as it keeps pressure on the United States to change course.
