Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has vowed to get rid of his iconic haircut before the next NFL season, citing his daughters as the inspiration.
After leading the Chiefs to their second straight title and winning his third Super Bowl MVP, Mahomes shared that his mohawk has ran its course. The 28-year-old appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday and admitted that he almost cut it days after their overtime win in Las Vegas.
‘It’s gone this offseason I promise y’all,’ Mahomes said. ‘I almost did it today and just came on today with it. I’ve got to do something.’
‘I’ve got a 3 year old at home,’ Mahomes said of his daughter, Sterling, who turns three next week. ‘I can’t just keep the mohawk going. At least change it up a little bit.’
After winning two straight titles and potentially completing the first three-peat in NFL history, McAfee asked Mahomes if he was not worried about a jinx with his hairdo.
‘I know,’ Mahomes acknowledged. ‘That’s the only reason I didn’t do it last year, and I’m in the same predicament, man.’
Mahomes’ barber DeJuan Bonds also told The Kansas City Star that the quarterback has long planned to change his hairstyle. Mahomes foreshadowed the change in the Netflix docuseries ‘Quarterback’ which was shot during the 2022 season.
In the show, Mahomes told his trainer Bobby Stroupe that he only kept the hair because of his endorsement deal with shampoo brand Head and Shoulders.
‘This is my last year with the hair. The hair is gone next year,’ Mahomes told Stroupe. ‘I’m going with a different hairstyle (than) this year. I almost did it this year but Head and Shoulders would have been mad. I can’t have two kids with a mohawk.’
Mahomes recently went viral for his physique after the Chiefs’ AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens. However, Mahomes quickly brushed off the ‘dad bod’ jokes and once again cited his fatherhood.
‘I have a six pack, it’s just under the dad bod. If you feel—there might be some skin there, but then underneath that, the six pack is there,’ he said.
He later added, ‘Like I got kids,’ as he continued to brush the jokes off.
With another title under his belt, Mahomes remains determined to change up his hairstyle and pursue a third straight ring.
‘Cause I gotta be a dad at some point, know what I mean?’ Mahomes said. ‘Imagine being 40 years old with this haircut. I mean, come on.’
